Do you need a root canal in Sarasota?

So it has finally come. Your dentist has told you that one of your teeth is extremely damaged and you need a root canal. This has been the day you’ve been dreading for years; you’ve always heard about how painful a root canal is. Can’t they just mercifully pull your tooth and be done with it? Actually, the “pain” often associated with the procedure is a complete myth thanks to modern dentistry. A root canal is actually one of the best ways to relieve your worst tooth pain, not cause it. Dr. Warren G. Hoffman is going to answer some of your most common questions about getting a root canal in Sarasota, and let you know why you have nothing to fear.

Why Do I Need Root Canal Therapy?

Your teeth are actually composed of layers, and the innermost layer is where the nerve of your tooth resides. This is called the dental pulp, and it is why you are able to feel your teeth despite them being rigid structures. This pulp can often become damaged in a number of different ways:

  • A tooth being broken
  • A deep cavity
  • Multiple procedures performed on one tooth
  • Extreme injury to the tooth

In all of these situations, your pulp has probably been injured and you are likely in a large amount of pain. The best solution may be to completely remove the pulp and repair your tooth, and this is done with a root canal.

What is the Procedure Like?

When you come to get a root canal with Dr. Hoffman and the team at Parkway Ridge Dental, the procedure involves 3 basic steps:

  • An access opening will be created to reach the pulp.
  • The damaged pulp will be gently removed and the area will be cleaned.
  • Your tooth will be filled with a substance to support its structure and prevent it from becoming infected.

The procedure can take anywhere from 30-90 minutes depending on your particular situation. Most of the time, Dr. Hoffman can easily complete it in just one visit. If a large amount of your tooth needed to be removed, you may need to return for another visit to have it fully restored with a crown.

Will It Hurt?

This is the big question. The definitive answer is no. The highly-skilled team at Parkway Ridge Dental will make sure you are thoroughly numbed before the procedure even begins. This will assure that you will feel no physical discomfort at any point. The pain from your infection or injury will probably be much greater than anything you will feel during your root canal. It is intended to relieve your pain, not cause it. You can come into the office with the peace of mind that your comfort is always one of our top priorities.

How Will It Feel Afterward?

Your tooth may be a little more sensitive after the procedure, but it will feel much better than it did before you came in. Any lasting discomfort should abate in a week or so, and can be easily managed with over-the-counter medicine. If it continues to hurt after a week, or if you notice swelling, be sure to give us a call.
